Retainers

Retainers are orthodontic devices used to maintain the alignment of your teeth. We treat malocclusion or misalignment with braces. Once all your teeth have aligned properly, we will replace these braces with retainers to prevent your teeth from moving out of alignment.

Retainers come in different types and are made using various materials. They can be fixed or removable. Regardless of the type, they ensure that your teeth stay in the new and desirable position, thus offering a permanent solution to a malocclusion.

When Do I Need Retainers?

Retainers are required once your crooked teeth are aligned using braces. If you have been wearing braces for a long time and your teeth are aligned, we will remove the oral appliance. However, at this stage, your soft tissues and jawbone may not be able to hold your teeth in place completely. This is when retainers would be required. Retainers stop your teeth from shifting to their previous position. Without retainers, the treatment of misaligned teeth remains incomplete.

How Does the Procedure Work?

We customize retainers according to the shape and form of your teeth. Fixed retainers are attached at the back of your teeth. Unlike braces, their appearance remains invisible, and you do not have to be hesitant while wearing them. It may take some time for you to get used to fixed retainers.

Removable retainers are made using a combination of clear plastic and wires. Like fixed retainers, we customize them as per your needs. You are supposed to wear removable retainers full-time during the first 3-6 months of your treatment. After that, we will suggest you wear your retainers only at night.

What are the Benefits of Retainers?

  • Retainers keep your teeth in line.
  • Many people thrust their tongue while talking, swallowing, or keeping their tongue at rest. A thrusting tongue can push your teeth forward, thus ruining your straightened smile. Retainers defend against such thrusting of the tongue.
  • Your mouth may feel different after we remove your braces. In some events, you may clench your jaw, which may lead to problems such as headaches and teeth grinding. Retainers help you avoid clenching of the jaw.
  • Some people may still have small gaps in their teeth after completing their orthodontic treatment. Retainers help to fill this gap, thus offering the desired smile.
  • When you wear retainers, your teeth become straight permanently. Consequently, it becomes easier for you to maintain your oral health.
